Pages Blanches

Place du Château - Strasbourg
Inauguration de Pages blanches par le Centre Chorégraphique de Strasbourg

All summer long, until 8 September, you can come and discover Pages Blanches, an immersive performative installation in the Place du Château devoted to the world of books, to mark Strasbourg’s selection as the UNESCO World Book Capital 2024.

About Pages Blanches

Devised by the collective Bruit du Frigo, the installation Pages Blanches (Blank Pages) features original seating ideas and selections of books that encourage passers-by to relax, delve into a book or even write a few words. The installation develops an aesthetic and a state of mind inspired by the places that actually produce paper, from traditional paper mills to industrial paper manufacturers. It revisits the tools and stages of paper making in various aspects of its settings and visitor comfort. On the ground, a long strip of wood calls to mind the silhouette of the chains that manufacture rolls of paper, with their presses and rollers, reworked into seating options in various postures. In the air, great suspended sheets bring to mind leaves of paper hanging from ceilings in drying rooms, as well as providing shade.

The installation, which covers a total of 714.78 m² reveals itself to be a big straightforward and identifiable space, supported on an underlying tubular structure in metal surrounding a patio conducive to hosting event-based activities and collective displays. The existing fountain is incorporated in the design to provide a touch of freshness in the summer. The street furniture incorporates bookshelves from which locals and tourists can select a book to read during their visit. From logbooks to blank pages, scattered around to encourage writing and drawing and so, as time moves on, create a collective narrative.

About Bruit du frigo

Bruit du Frigo is a creative collective founded by Yvan Detraz in 1997, which incorporates architects, artists, urban planners, intermediaries and builders.

Bruit du Frigo devises artistic, participative and contextual projects in public spaces, comprising a mix of urban installations, micro-architectural structures, collective actions and cultural events. At the point where art, territories and populations meet, its approach favours a poetic reappropriation of the urban space and aims to promote the transition to shared and inclusive sustainable urban planning by proposing alternative ways to imagine and construct our environment and exploring new forms of public space.

Pages Blanches programme

In addition, the installation hosts a programme in its own right all summer long. In June, the Pages Blanches programme focuses on mediation around the structure. Visitors will be invited to explore the installation freely every day of the week or at the weekend in offbeat tours and practical workshops on books and reading.

In July and August, four themes will form the core of the programme on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 6 pm and on Sundays starting at 9 am, and at the end of every day as of 6 pm:

  • A page to savour from 5 to 7 July and from 2 to 4 August;
  • A page to travel from 12 to 14 July and from 9 to 11 August;
  • A page to dream from 19 to 21 July and from 16 to 18 August;
  • A page to excite from 26 to 28 July and from 29 to 1 September.

Based on these four themes, a programme has been devised with local officials that includes dancing and readings and concerts and yoga based on books, family entertainments and workshops. An original, eclectic programme to suit every taste:

Every Friday starting a 6 pm, Pages Blanches goes dancing. The programme will include dancing in various styles and from different repertoires:  Latin dancing, ballroom dancing, electro music, swing, modern ballroom.

On Saturdays starting at 6 pm, it’s time for concerts and shows of all kinds: local and national artists will take over the Place du Château with something for everyone, ranging from operatic recitals to jazz to contemporary, and taking in French chanson and drag shows.

And Sundays, starting at 9 am, are reserved for less strenuous activities with family entertainments as of 6 pm.
